One of the most difficult and discouraging aspects of having acne are the marks that are left behind after a breakout clears.  Just like any wound or injury, when a pimple does damage to the dermis, often a scar is left behind. The more inflamed the blemish is, the deeper it is, and the longer it takes to heal. See how you can fade your acne scars!

Types of Acne Scars

Scars are a normal part of our healing process after there has been damage to the skin.  Wounds that are beyond superficial and damage the dermis, will usually result in a scar. When breakouts happen in the follicle wall, the pore swells.  When the pore swells and ruptures (if it is a deep break in the follicle wall) will result in scarring.

To repair the damage to the dermis, your skin forms collagen fibers that aid in the repair of your skin.  Unfortunately, the repair will sometimes not come out as flawless as you hope for. Here are the different types of scarring that you may have when healing from an acne breakout:

Keloid: During the healing process when the body produces too much collagen, causing a mass or lump of tissue at the skin’s surface.

Ice Pick and Boxcar Scars: Depressions in the skin’s surface from a loss of tissue

Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation: This is not a scar, but a temporary discoloration of the skin, this is what we see most often in our clinic.  It may take a while, but they will eventually fade, especially with the help of targeted skincare products and in-clinic treatments at Austin Skin Plus.
