The holidays can be the most joy-filled time of the year, but they can also be huge setbacks to our healthy diet routines. Sugar, dairy, saturated fats, and alcohol can all lead to acne breakouts, which is discouraging because most holiday meals revolve around all of these things! Between the homemade bread, the sugary sweet sparkling cider, the heavy cream sauces, the salty gravy, the butter soaked mashed potatoes, the bottles of Merlot, and the mounds of apple and pumpkin pie with whipped cream, it feels like there’s no way to escape inflammatory foods over the holidays. The good news is, there is a way to approach the season without totally derailing our good eating habits, and it doesn’t require complete deprivation from the foods we love.

Pick A Day To Indulge

While you can still indulge in the holiday foods, my suggestion is you just pick ONE day to do so.  After you have your indulgence, here are some foods to avoid that are main acne aggravators:

  • Iodides
  • Milk (organic, non-organic, or nonfat)Inflammatory foods could lead to acne breakouts!
  • Cheese
  • Foods containing Whey or Soy
  • Seafood (Shellfish)
  • Foods high in Androgen’s
  • Peanuts, Peanut Butter
  • Oils – Peanut, Corn, or Canola
  • Organ meats
  • Sugars (especially refined sugars)

Try not over stress and beat yourself up for indulging in the holiday foods. An indulgence every now and then is okay (heck! I do!).   What has helped me is moderation and balance. Most importantly, enjoy time with family and friends – after all, that is what this time of year is all about!
