Oh winter – fuzzy socks, wool sweaters, and hats. Stepping on crunchy leaves and sipping warm coffee- there are so many things that we love about the colder seasons, whether it be the joy of being with family or the content of spending time with your closest friends that brings you happiness during the holiday season, there is one thing that we can all agree on disliking – the dryness. With winter, comes dryness. Our lips are peeling, our hair is brittle, and our skin is parched. Dry skin happens when our skin lacks protective oils, or when there isn’t enough water in the outermost layer of skin. Dry skin may not seem like a big deal, but it can lead to itchiness, dryness, flakiness and overall discomfort daily. Here are some tips to help combat dry skin this winter so that you can keep your skin in tip top shape. 

1. Use Tepid Water When Cleansing

When your skin feels dry, it may seem like a good idea to use some hot water to cleanse, when in reality this is a big no-no. Using hot water to cleanse your skin can cause it to become even more dry, and add fuel to the fire. Try to keep your bath and showers shorter, and be sure to use a mild cleanser as well. 

2. Moisturize, Always & Often.

Add our clinic, when a client is feeling extra dry, we always have them add their Hylavera hyaluronic acid gel moisturizer before they apply their moisturizer. This will help add extra hydration into the skin and relieve any dryness and irritation. If that still isn’t working, you can add in an oil to your moisturizer for extra hydration. If you’re feeling really dry you can also add in a light layer of vaseline or aquaphor over the skin as well. Be sure you’re drinking enough water daily as well!

3. Add A Humidifier 

If you live in a drier climate, or find yourself blasting your heat you may want to consider adding a humidifier to your home. As I stated earlier,  dry skin comes from lack of moisture in the skin, so adding a humidifier is a great way to combat the water loss from your skin and enviorment. 

4. Turn down the heat

You know what they say, if you can’t handle the heat get out of the kitchen. Lets just say your kitchen is your car, home, actual kitchen, work space and everything else. Heating systems will dry moisture out of the air and create heat. Try to keep your heater at a lower temperature, and use blankets to bundle up at night.
