Diet can have a big role in our skin.  Our bodies require nutrients to function properly and provide fuel to our cells. However, sugary foods high on the glycemic index can be damaging to our bodies and can even cause acne breakouts!

Diets that contain foods high in glucose cause our bodies to produce large amounts of insulin. When your insulin spikes, a hormonal reaction takes place.  Hormones such as testosterone and DHT (dihydrotestosterone) can increase oil production. Thus, pore clogging oils that are overproduced can cause acne breakouts.

Make A Change!

The good news is, there are lifestyle changes you can make to ensure you are nourishing your body with the healthy carbohydrates it needs, without stressing your body. Eating foods that are low on the glycemic index are the best for your health and skin. The lower down on the glycemic index a food is, the less it is going to affect you having an insulin spike. Some of these foods include

  • 100% stone-ground whole wheat or pumpernickel bread
  • Oatmeal (rolled or steel-cut), oat bran, and muesli
  • Sweet potato, corn, yam, Lima/butter beans, peas, legumes and lentils
  • Most fruits, non-starchy vegetables and carrotsEat foods that are low on the GI

Replacing the sugary and processed foods in your diet with these more nutrient-rich foods can help reduce oil production!  While a change in diet may not clear your acne completely, it will certainly complement the skin care program you are on!
