It’s no secret that we want to all stay looking young in today’s world.  And it’s no fun when we must go up against a bad acne breakout or fine wrinkle lines that suddenly appeared!  So, what’s causing all this to happen?  It could be your hormones!

Hormones are the chemical messengers that travel to the organs in the body and tell them how to function. As we age, our hormones fluctuate and change. Men experience the most drastic change in hormones during puberty, while women experience a drastic change in hormones about every 7-10 years.

Some of the main acne causing agents are androgens. Both men and women produce androgens and they have hundreds of different functions. Some androgens include testosterone, androstenedione, and dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Androgens can over stimulate the sebaceous glands causing an over production of sebum, therefore causing acne breakouts.

If your skin is breaking out, here are some signs that it could be hormonal acne:

  • You’re stressed out!
  • The acne is more cystic in nature
  • It’s happening around your chin and jawline

Aging Hormones

It’s amazing how we see ourselves in the mirror every day and then all the sudden we notice we look older!  Hormones have a play in our again process as well and can accelerate our aging process if they are not in balance.  Hormonal changes that can age your skin are:

  • Too much testosterone
  • Not enough estrogen
  • Low thyroid

However, stress will offset that balance and can be very damaging to your skin as well your health overall. Cortisol significantly reduces the collagen in the skin and reduces estrogen and progesterone production making skin thinner, less elastic, and dull.  Taking steps to reduce stress will have a 360-degree impact on your health – including encouraging an environment for brighter and fuller skin!
